Anyone that knows me knows I’m obsessed with Tumblr and it’s not just because only on Tumblr can I find people just as obsessed with TV and movies as I am. It’s also because somehow every time I’m on Tumblr there is a text post or photo that just completely resonates with my current situation. Even if they’re quotes from other people or something I’ve heard before, it sometimes needs to be said again. Here are some of my favorites.
1. “Don’t feel sad on someone who gave up on you, feel sorry for them because they gave up on someone who would [have] never given up on them.” – Unknown (Tumblr: Neruolove)
2. “missing people who treated you like garbage is very strange and dumb” (Tumblr: spermbanker)
4. “u know when u really like someone and literally every little thing they do is cute and no matter what face they make they always look perfect to you” (Source: tinychatter)
7. “i wish more people said that being single is normal and you’re not going to meet and marry someone and that’s fine and if marriage happens, it happens. and it’s not the next big ticket to check off in life’s checklist because not everyone meets someone they want to marry. and that’s normal you’re not broken or unfulfilled if you are single” (Tumblr: swingsetindecember)
8. “Hell is loving you in my sleep and waking up alone.” (Tumblr: absentions)
9. “Say it loud and go from there.” – Mark Sloan (Tumblr: shonz)
*Side Note: In case this one isn’t clear the point is if you have something to say (specifically if you want to tell someone you love them) say it and worry about the consequences later. What’s worse wondering if you made a mistake or wondering what if?)*
10. “Progress is progress no matter how small.” (Tumblr: forever-and-alwayss)
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day here is his “I Have a Dream Speech”. Let us never forget the dream and continue to strive for what Mr. King hoped for.
There’s not much difference this week from last week (so boring!) but as promised here’s my Hate It or Love It for the week based on iTunes top 10 singles right now.
1. Dark Horse by Katy Perry ft. Juicy J
As much as I love this song I think it’s time we retire this one. Katy it’s been real but I’m over this song. Next!
2. Timber by Pitbull ft. Ke$ha
Someone please explain to me the obsession with this song. I just don’t understand. I really don’t. Still hate it.
3. Say Something by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera
Still love it. I think this is such a beautiful song. The lyrics, the music, and the vocals are just amazing. Currently playing on repeat. Love it!
4. Counting Stars by One Republic
I like it. It’s not a song I’m listening to on repeat or anything but when it comes on I don’t change it. Not my favorite One Republic song but definitely a good one.
5. Talk Dirty by Jason Derulo ft. 2 Chainz
I have never been a fan of Jason Derulo, especially when he feels the need to say his name at the beginning of every single one of his songs. This song has not swayed my feelings. The only thing I like about this song is the beat. Definitely not a single I’ll be putting in my iTunes. Derulo needs to do better.
6. Happy by Pharrell Williams
Love it! Okay, maybe I’m a little biased because I loved this movie but honestly something about this song just makes you feel, well, happy. It’s a nice beat you can do a cute little dance to and when I hear it I just think about the little minions dancing and it makes me smile. Adding to my music library right now and I am not ashamed. Clearly I’m not the only one that loves it either.
7. Team by Lorde
I still like it. I haven’t heard this song as often as I’ve heard “Royals” (but that might also be because I don’t listen to the radio that often). Either way, I haven’t heard it enough times to be sick of it yet. Definitely still one of my favorites on this list.
8. Pompeii by Bastille
I didn’t add this one to my iTunes library last week. Maybe I will this week. I still like it. Again, not my usual type of music but I think it’s a good song. Glad it’s still doing well.
9. Let Her Go by Passenger
Love it! I am obsessed with this song. I could listen to it on repeat all day long. I just love the vocals on this song. Passenger, also known as Michael Rosenberg, is a great singer and I think this is such an emotional song and you can hear that in his voice. Fantastic!
10. The Monster by Eminem ft. Rihanna
I’m over this song. I’ve heard it too many times and I’m sick of it. I still think it’s a good song but I’m ready to hear Eminem’s next single. Let’s move on.
Below are all the songs of this week and don’t forget to vote for your favorite song.
Kieran Scott, Kate Brian, and Emma Harrison. Combine these three amazing writers and you get one amazing woman: Kieran Scott. Writing two New York Times best selling series along with over 50 books Scott has taken over the young adult literary scene.
As Scott churns out about two books per year and always seems to be working on her next project, it’s amazing that she does anything but write all day. But she does. Scott is more than just an extraordinary writer; she’s also a regular, every day person just like the rest of us. Scott took me through the history behind her names, what she does when she’s not writing, what she’s got planned next, and how we can somehow become her someday (maybe).
The Secret Behind the Names
Many young readers have heard of “Kate Brian” but not everyone knows that Brian and Scott are the same person. Many have tried to figure out what prompts the change in names when it comes to Scott’s writing but the truth is probably less complicated than you think.
Scott, who began as an editor, had a friend who worked for Alloy Entertainment (best known for their work on Pretty Littler Liars and The Vampire Diaries). The company had a book in the works, The Princess and the Pauper, which had been assigned to a different writer at the time.
“The author wanted to have two different names and she wanted to keep her name for her adult books,” said Scott. “[The publishers] came up with this fake name, ‘Kate Brian’, for this work. The work came in very late [however] and it was badly written. My friend called me and asked me if I would be willing to rewrite it for them but I had to rewrite it under this name because they already printed the commercial material.”
Thus began Scott’s transition into ‘Kate Brian’. “Then the publisher wanted more books by ‘Kate Brian’ and that was me,” said Scott. Scott now uses “Kate Brian” for all her Hyperion published books and Kieran Scott for all her books published by Simon & Schuster.
Besides Brian there is one other pen name that you can find Scott’s books under that many people don’t know about. “Emma Harrison was a name I came up with to write TV tie-ins and things that weren’t my original ideas,” said Scott. “I wrote things like Charmed, Everwood, Alias, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen books and Disney books under that name, and then a few paperback romances.”
Different from her pen name “Kate Brian” Scott came up with this one all on her own. “Emma Thompson is my favorite actress and Harrison Ford is my favorite actor,” she said. “I’m not sure whether I’ll ever use it again unless someone comes to me with a great job that I can’t refuse.”
“It seemed like an impossible thing to achieve.”
Though it may seem crazy to us now, Scott didn’t always think she would be an author. “I never really considered that I could be a novel writer when I was growing up,” said Scott. “It seemed like that type of thing that a lot of people aspire to but only a few achieve, like being an actor or president or something.”
Although Scott grew up in a household where reading and writing was the norm Scott still feared that being a novelist wouldn’t happen for her. Therefore she set her sights on a different goal.
“I set out to be a journalist,” said Scott. “I was an English and journalism major and I didn’t really like it that much. I just never had the self-confidence to go up to someone and ask for an interview. That was always really hard for me.”
As Scott, got closer to graduation and realized journalism was not for her she began to wonder what she would do. That’s when she saw an ad for a job that was perfect for her.
“I answered an ad for an editorial position at this book company,” said Scott. “It was really the first time that I considered that people edited books. It’s not just the author; there are editors also. And that’s sort of how I got into it. And I thought if I could make a living by reading, how great would that be?”
Through her experience working as an editor Scott began to learn how making a book worked and started writing her own fiction again. “After a few years of working for hire I broke out on my own to see if I could make a living out of it and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
She’s Just Like Us
Many people know Scott as “Kieran Scott” and “Kate Brian”, the writers but what many of her fans don’t know is who is Kieran Scott, the person? Besides being an amazing author, Scott’s biggest role is being a wife and mom. Scott has two sons, ages six and three, who keep her busy and when she’s not doing that (or rather during that) Scott is just like anyone of us.
“I spend a lot of the time at the gym,” said Scott. “I also like to bake. If I have a free Saturday or Sunday afternoon I’m always baking cookies or cake or something and then going to the gym to work them off.”
Outside of the gym, Scott is also an avid reader and TV watcher, though she may not be watching what you’re into. “I love to read and I’m a huge TV addict although whenever someone says to me, ‘Do you watch Game of Thrones?’ I say, ‘No’ or ‘Do you watch Breaking Bad?’ and I say, ‘No.’ then there seems like there’s twenty TV shows that I don’t watch but I feel like I watch so much TV.”
When it comes to Scott’s reading habits she can’t help but stray back to her own genre of fiction. “I end up reading a lot of teen fiction because I do all these panels and I hear all these people talk about their books and I really want to read them because they all sound amazing so that’s kind of an occupational hazard.”
Some of her recent reads include The Darkest Minds series, Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality, and various thrillers to help her try her hand at writing a thriller novel. “I like when a book surprises me even when it’s not a book that’s supposed to surprise you.” Just like us.
What’s Next?
So far this year, there are already two books by Scott scheduled for release: Endless, the last book in the Shadowlands trilogy and Only Everything, the first book in her newest trilogy that ties in some mythology into a romantic series.
Though the added mythological aspect to the book definitely makes the books sound even more interesting, this wasn’t part of Scott’s original plan. “I actually really wanted to write a straight forward romance series,” said Scott. “I pitched it to my editor and agent and they liked the character but they felt like the series needed a hook and I was really annoyed honestly, because it wasn’t what I wanted to do. But then I started to think about it and thought if I want it to be really romantic, what went along with romance? And it just hit me one night: cupid.”
From there Scott started thinking about Roman mythology and how it could be incorporated into her newest novel. Going back to sixth grade, when she was last obsessed with the topic, Scott decided to do some research and came up with an even better idea for her newest novel that also incorporated her love for a fish out of water story.
Now, Only Everything focuses on a teenaged female Cupid who is banished to Earth and must match three couples in order to save the love of her life from the wrath of the Gods. And she has to do all of this powerless.
“I just imagined what it would be like for a goddess who is so used to getting what she wants and being able to do whatever she wants, and counting on these powers to be thrust into Earth without these powers,” said Scott. “And really she has a complete inability to act as a human and so that was so much fun to write.”
Therefore what started as a disappoint for Scott who feared she wouldn’t be able to write what she wanted to write, it actually became what she referred to as her favorite thing she’s ever written which is evident by the fact that she’s already finished all three books.
This doesn’t mean Scott’s done writing, of course. Currently she’s working on another romance novel and trying her hand at an adult thriller. She never stops.
Some Advice
Now that you know exactly who Kieran Scott is, it’s no surprise that you’re wondering how you can become her. Well here’s her advice for one of the most well known struggles of an aspiring writer: getting stuck.
“Go back and reread what you’ve written and see if there’s something in what you’ve written that made you get stuck,” she advised. “There’s sometimes an answer in what you’ve already written as to why you’re blocked.”
Also, Scott advises to just write, even when you’re not sure what you’re writing about. “If you have a day when you have time to write but you can’t seem to get started just write whatever,” she said. “Write something even if it sucks or you think it’s the dumbest thing ever. I have done that where I start out and I write some really lame dialogue and after a few paragraphs, I get into the groove and I start writing stuff that’s good.”
To learn more about Kieran Scott you can visit her website or follow her on her one of her Tumblrs (here and here). Only Everything is set to release in stores and online in May 2014.
So your best friend has left you to go to some other country (for argument’s sake let’s say Ghana) and now you’re left to fend for yourself. As my own best friend separation nears it’s end (thank God) I’ve come to realize that no one should ever be left without their other half. You will go crazy and this is why.
1. Who are you supposed to watch your shows/movies with?
Source: http://www.tumblr.comAll your shows are coming back on and you have no one to scream about them with. Also, you can’t have movie night by yourself. That’s just inhumane. Do you know how awkward it is to get to a really funny part of a movie, find yourself laughing, and then turn to see no one’s there laughing with you. “Haha so funny” *begins sobbing*.
2. “Ohmigosh you won’t believe what just happen!” – you said to no one because your bestie’s gone
This is probably the worst. Yes there are some instances, like getting a good grade or the job you’ve been waiting for, that everyone would understand your excitement but only your bestie knows how long you’ve been waiting to get that guys number or about that annoying girl in your class who always makes everyone look bad? Yeah, you just got a better grade then her and NO ONE ELSE UNDERSTANDS HOW GREAT THIS IS. So frustrating.
3. “This is the worst day ever!”
Same as number two but the opposite. Your day has completely sucked and you really need to vent to someone who will just let you whine and pretend they understand what you’re talking about even if they have no idea but that person isn’t here which then makes you feel worse. Now you’re just crying into your bowl of ice cream wondering why the world sucks.
4. You’ve now lost any motivation to go out
“Do you want to go out tonight?”
Thought process: Who am I going to dance with when my jam comes on? How am I supposed to know if that creeper behind me is in fact a creep? Who can I trust to tell me my outfit is cute or too much? Who’ll make sure I get home safe if I take one too many shots? WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ME?
“Yeah, maybe I’ll just stay in tonight.” It’s okay. Watching Netflix is way less stressful anyway.
5. “Where are they? What are they doing? Do they miss me? Are they having fun without me? What’s happening?”
Here comes the serious case of FOMO. Has s/he made new friends? Are they leaving you behind? Will they come back all cultured and not even like the same things anymore? Will they still like you? What will happen? Yep, you’ve officially lost it. It’s okay. Everything will be okay.
Truthfully, don’t stress. So your better half has left to go explore the world or something. Don’t worry. They’ll be back before you know it. Just try to hold together until then so they’ll have a friend to come back to. Good luck!
As a 20-year old woman who has never been in a serious relationship I am often asked and told some very outrageous things. After talking to some of my other single girlfriends and just seeing things on social media I can tell I’m not the only one. So here are some common things my friends and/or I have heard.
1. “Are you gay?”
I’m sorry what? Because I’m not currently dating anyone I’m now a lesbian? First of all let’s be clear if you’re gay that’s fine. However, even if I was how do you just ask someone that? You literally just asked someone to either out themselves or lie to your face. I don’t understand. This is not okay. This is never, ever okay.
2. “You’re just too picky that’s why you haven’t found anyone yet.”
Ummmmm, really? Is that it? Please point out the 20 dates I’ve turned down this week. Oh, wait . . .
Or please show any viable candidates. Was I supposed to say yes to that guy that asked me to hop on his pegs and take a trip to Mickey D’s? Should I have gotten into that car with that random stranger that yelled, “Hey Ma!” at me? Whoops! My bad. In that case you are correct, I am too picky. Sorry I’m not sorry.
3. “Your time is running out.”
Okay to be fair this is usually grandmas or sometimes parents that say this and it’s often to my older friends but still. We’re all in our early 20’s. What time is running out? According to a quick Google search, a woman’s fertility doesn’t start heading down that downward slope until 27 so I think I’m good. If I start to get worried though I’ll definitely try to quickly find a suitor before my clock runs out.
Also, why is it that women tend to be told this more regularly than men? Yes I want to have children one day but it’s not my only goal just like I’m sure it isn’t for men. I’ve got other things on my mind then making sure I get married and have kids in time. Also, you know, there’s always adoption.
4. “Don’t worry, you’ll find someone one day.”
Um, thanks but I wasn’t worried. I’m actually fine with it. Sorry but thinking about my single status is really the least of my concerns right now. I’ve got school, my future, my friends, and my job amongst other things on my mind. Being single isn’t the end of the world and just because you think so doesn’t mean I do. I’m fine.
5. “Maybe if you try a little harder. Why don’t you go out more?”
But really. Seriously? Again, why is my being single my fault? Yes I’m okay with it but I didn’t choose this life it chose me. I am not in any way purposefully staying single, and for your information I do go out. Again, I just haven’t met the right person yet. But thanks, I’ll definitely “try harder”. I’ll even put myself out there more. Then if I’m still single you can try to figure out another reason for it.
6. “I know the perfect guy for you.”
Maybe you could say that I’m still just being picky or whatever but I don’t need you to set me up with anyone. I’m fine just the way I am. If I want your help I will ask for it. Trust me. Until then, please stop trying to push every single guy you know in my face. Thank you.
Basically, I say this all to say that if someone’s not in a relationship and they’re just doing them, let them. It’s none of your business why they’re single and you asking them about it or making snide comments about it isn’t helping and isn’t going to get them a significant other. If they want your opinion they’ll ask for but if not, really it’s none of your concern.
It’s finally that time of year again: the return of my favorite shows. I don’t know about you guys but I for one couldn’t be more excited. Nothing too crazy happened in the premiere of Switched at Birth but I feel like they have set a good foundation for the season. If you haven’t watched yet here’s your spoilers warning: SPOILERS!
First, my favorite couple, Bemmett, is sadly still not back together but they are friendly so that gives me a little hope. However, it seems like Bay my have a new love interest this season (because Lord knows these girls are never single for too long). His name is Tank and he’s a dedicated frat boy taking an art class. Many of you might recognize Tank (played by Max Adler) from Glee (you know back when it was still good). Anyway, I like Tank but I’m hoping he and Bay just stay friends rather than become “Bank”. However, Bay is still rebounding from her last “cheating” boyfriend so who knows what’ll happen.

Meanwhile Daphne is currently dealing with her 100 hours worth of probation. Working in a free clinic, Daphne meets a (HOT) nurse practitioner (I’m thinking maybe another Chef Jeff situation in the works?) and a cool guy in a wheel chair who has a great sense of humor.
I like him but I also think Daphne needs to be single for a while. She’s been jumping from guy to guy for a little too long now. She needs a break. Plus she needs to focus on how she’s going to get back in John’s good graces, although really John needs to just let it go. Yeah she messed up but she’s a teenager. They make mistakes.
Everyone else is also dealing with their own issues. Toby is missing his new wife, Nikki, Regina wants to start her own business with money she thinks Angelo has but he may have to put all that money into his own business. Katherine’s feeling down and is going on medication and has now starting lying to John (not good) but hey sometimes you need a break. John is getting crap at his job because people think he made Daphne blackmail the senator and basically everyone’s kind of on the struggle bus right now.
Even so, Daphne, Toby, and Bay will be starting a field hockey team at Carlton and Katherine’s now taking dance lessons and trying new things, so maybe they’ll be okay. I’m excited for this new season and can’t wait to see what happens next.
After what has felt like forever HBO finally released the trailer for the fourth season of Game of Thrones and I can’t even contain my excitement. If you haven’t seen it already (seriously what have you been doing if you haven’t) you can find it below.
I haven’t read the books so truthfully I don’t even really know what half of the trailer showed means. I just know it looks good and intense with more battles, drama, love (or lust more likely), and a building plot that will most likely take many unexpected turns.
First, my girl Daenerys is ready to take what is hers: the throne. She clearly isn’t going to let anyone stand in her way and with the help of her dragons and army she seems to have the power to do so.
Now to my favorite family, the Starks. We don’t really get a lot of information about what’s going on with this quickly dwindling family in the preview. What we do know is the Wildlings are coming and Jon Snow is going to be at the forefront of that battle, most likely fighting his former love, Ygritte. Talk about awkward. Arya is still wielding her sword somewhere and I didn’t see Sansa anywhere in the trailer but seeing as her husband was in a cell that can’t mean good things for her.
As for that other family, the Lannisters seem to be dealing with some strive within their own ranks. Cersei, as crazy and evil as she is, loves her kids and will go to extraordinary lengths to protect them, even if it’s against her own family members. I’m not sure what exactly the Lannisters will be arguing about this season but as always it’s looks as if Joffrey will put his foot in his mouth, saying something absolutely outrageous and they seem to have a new enemy that’s out for blood.
There were a lot of characters missing in the trailer that I wished to see, like Tyrion’s love, Shae, who left at the end of last season, maybe? I’m not too sure. I do know she wasn’t too into the idea of hooking up with Tyrion in secret while he was married to Sansa. Also, like I said, Sansa wasn’t in it and I didn’t see Hodor either. This doesn’t mean anything of course. I’m sure all three of these characters will be in season 4 as will a whole bunch more including some new characters.
The real question will be who will come out of this season alive. Sadly we won’t know anything until April.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are great especially when they’re together. It’s no surprise that they were asked to host again for the second year in a row. Their opening monologue was fantastic. They cracked jokes on not only the many actors in the audience but also on themselves. I especially enjoyed their Scandal moment when they talked about Kerry Washington being pregnant and when Poehler blamed Netflix for the future of TV becoming dramas made by SnapChat. These two ladies kept the jokes rolling throughout the show and I think they did a great job.
P. Diddy
I think we can all agree that Diddy was on something last night (some are suggesting he brought his own Ciroc). Whatever it was it made him act a little strangely. From stepping in Usher’s spot when they were presenting to awkwardly trying to hug Bono, Diddy was all over the place. However, I thought it was hilarious so I think it was fine.
The Winners
Their was a lot of talent at the Globes last night and I think everyone’s awards were well deserved. Of course I was rooting for Kerry Washington to finally win an award for her role as Olivia Pope but sadly she did not. However, I love Robin Wright on House of Cards so I wasn’t too mad about it. Other notable wins were American Hustle which received four awards in total (I still need to see that movie!), Frozen for best animated feature, 12 Years a Slave for best drama motion picture, Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street (still not an Oscar but maybe one day Leo), and both Breaking Bad and Brooklyn Nine-Nine left with two awards.
The Fashion
Almost everyone looked fantastic last night. Many people did not like Jennifer Lawerence’s dress but I liked it. Then again maybe I’m biased because I love her but I thought she looked cute and I love her haircut.
One of my all time favorites was Sofia Vegara. As always she looked flawless. Her dress accentuated all her curves in the right way and I just couldn’t take it. Also, her Modern Family co-star, Sarah Hyland was also killing it on the red carpet. Other notable ladies were Taylor Swift, Dianne Keaton, Kaley Cuoco, Sosie Bacon (the Ms. Golden Globe), Krya Sedgewick, and Reese Witherspoon. They were all working it and I wish I could afford their fashion.
All and all, I thought the show was great and I wouldn’t mind if Fey and Poehler hosted again. I’ll be crossing my fingers and my toes in hopes that dream comes true. Now onto the next award show. When’s the Oscars again?
